In northeastern Lund, it will soon be possible to create completely new materials since the opportunities offered by ESS and MAX IV will attract world-leading material researchers. Science Village is being built between these two facilities. Lund resident Ulrika Lindmark is responsible for transforming what was once fields into a modern and attractive area. “We believe people from around the world think Lund is a great city to thrive in”, says Ulrika Lindmark. “We invite people and businesses to visit, get to know us and stay.”

Ulrika Lindmark has been serving as CEO of Science Village Scandinavia AB in her hometown of Lund since January 2014. Science Village is being built between the MAX IV and ESS research laboratories. It will all become part of Brunnshög, which is Lund's new district in the northeast and will also feature tram connections.

There are already many international facilities and companies in Lund. For example, it is home to Ideon Science Park with innovative companies, the new World Trade Center office area, and international companies like Medicon Village, Alfa Laval, Tetra Pak, Axis Communications, Schneider Electric and Sony. The research laboratories MAX IV and ESS will now also join this mix.

Ulrika Lindmark, why is all of this happening in Lund?

“We know why ESS and MAX IV were constructed in Lund,” says Ulrika Lindmark. “The MAX lab is situated here because the talented people who developed the MAX lab and the technology have been here since the 1980s. ESS is situated here because Europe actively chose Lund. There is a long story behind it, but ESS and MAX IV are here in part due to each other. Synchrotron light and neutron research are often situated side by side. These two, together with the research of Lund University, build the entire research infrastructure. The Municipality of Lund and Region Skåne are committed to keeping researchers and their research in Lund or Skåne. If you then add the existing housing shortage into the equation, you have the reason for the entire Brunnshög district.”

You are responsible for the development of Science Village, which is a new district between ESS and MAX IV. What is planned for the area?
“The area will transform into 250,000 square meters of buildings. Our task is to build what is needed to make the area function well – whether it be a gym, cafés and restaurants or temporary housing for guest researchers, lab functions and office buildings. Lund University wants to move operations there, and other Swedish universities will also want to have a presence there to be able to utilize ESS and MAX IV. We estimate that about half of the 250,000 square meters will be premises for companies working closely with the material research being conducted at ESS and MAX IV as they will want to benefit from an environment where so many companies are involved in material testing.”

How will you work to ensure Science Village is a sustainable district?
“Science Village will be built as a sustainable district the same way as other districts being built nowadays. Beyond this, it will become a district that will utilize energy from the research facilities rather than relying on outside energy. Waste heat from the facilities can be used to heat and cool the buildings. The electricity needed must be produced on site using, for example, solar or wind power.”

There is a lot going on in the little city of Lund. What makes Lund so special?
“A city with almost 90,000 residents in its population center plus 40,000 students is no ordinary city,” says Ulrika Lindmark. “The construction of MAX IV and ESS is a big deal and really puts Lund on the map. In addition, we will not only conduct world-class research, but also have friendly people and a good infrastructure so that guest researchers who come here will want to come back – perhaps on a visit with their family or to move here. I hope that people from around the world will think Lund is a great city to be in. We want people and companies to come here and then stay and thrive in Skåne.”

How long will it take to build Science Village?
“Our long-term forecast indicates that Science Village will grow by 10,000 square meters a year. Thus, it will take 25 years for the district to be fully built. It is actually an advantage that it will take time since new needs will arise along the way. According to our plans, construction of the area will begin in 2019. The first two buildings will contain housing for guest researchers, restaurants, office space, and an auditorium that will also serve as a concert venue. We will eventually also have a science center on our property.”

How does it feel to work with the new area?
“It feels amazing! I am a property developer and a highway and water engineer. I am knowledgeable in building a city on a field, and now I can do this while working in close collaboration with the best research in the world. I have a lot of patience, and I am not at all bothered by the fact that it will all be complete in 25 years when I am retired. I enjoy long processes that create something that will stand for hundreds of years.”
